The hugely popular Dunkirk Carnival is in full swing when a man is found hanging from the top of a mast on a sailing boat. Captain Janie Roussel, who is a big fan of this centuries old tradition, takes on the investigation with Lieutenant Eric Dampierre, freshly arrived in the North. Their affinity, obvious at first glance, is put to the test as the criminal investigation turns out to be unsolvable in a city in full-on carnival mode.
